when i was in my early teens, i was obsessed with reading 'seventeen' and other such magazines. there have been few things in life for which i've been willing to get in trouble, and for some reason, one was reading fashion/beauty magazines. ask my two ex-boyfriends; i was rarely willing to get in trouble with my parents over them, to my fault. the operative prefix here is 'ex', of course. it was never that simple, but my fear of getting in trouble was definitely a factor in the demise of both relationships. i think i'm a bit more mature now, but i guess i won't know until i get a chance to test out my new maturity. this is another story for another time.
anyway, because the name implied the proper reading-age of its readership, my mom never let me read 'seventeen'. but i pursued its pages in stealth. and after i turned the sweet age of 17
(which to this day always seems more sophisticated an age than other ages, like, say, 24, mostly i think because of the above mentioned obsession), i moved onto glamour and cosmopolitan, which of course were contraband. and i remember reading one article about how everyone will live by themselves at some point in their lives. if i read an article now that made a grand generalization like this, i would probably take issue with it, questioning its socio-political-cultural underpinnings. but at the tender age of whatever age i was, all i could think was, 'ha! what LOSER lives alone!?!? some kind of big fat ugly loser.' well folks, i'm now that big fat ugly loser. but it isn't so! whether i am big, fat, or ugly is debatable, but i am no loser my friends. living alone, so far, has been such a wonderful experience. i fucking love this shit. i feel so good about it and my life and my choice to shell out a little extra cash for my own place. and i am SO glad i didn't decide to live at any of the other one-bedrooms or efficiencies i saw in dec2004/jan2005. phew, were they terrible. if it was good location, the apartment was small, with low ceilings, and a general dampness. if the apartment was a reasonable size, it was out in the boondocks, completely inaccessible by metro or metro bus. and my current apartment, though it has a view of the roofs of several buildings, is fantasically located and sized. wheeee! and i can sit around with minimal clothing and sing geeta dutt in falsetto until the cows come home.
